  1. What is one of the most important qualities of a great leader?

One of my favorite sayings is, “We should be better tomorrow than we are today.” To achieve this, it is important for leaders to surround themselves with a strong team that is comprised of people who bring multidisciplinary skills and experiences to the table. And then listen. When you listen, you build relationships and create loyalty and trust. Listening to team members at all levels provides insight and appreciation for what’s working right, as well as identifying opportunities for improvement and innovation. It fosters a culture of collaboration, creativity and compassion.

  1. How does your organization take our community to the next level?

We are shifting our vision beyond healing to the promising science of prevention, with a keen focus on truly humanizing health care. Our goal is to make care more accessible, affordable and always the highest quality. This means investing in the best quality, the best doctors, nurses, staff people that we can find, to provide the best quality services close to home so residents don’t have to travel (to New York City or Philadelphia).

We are looking towards more community–based care and stronger connections to treat an aging population and an epidemic of chronic illness. We are investing strongly in care coordination and better technology. Telehealth and precision medicine are significant factors in this transformation, and our strategies include expanding urgent care and ambulatory centers and investing in innovative research in the hope of game-changing discoveries. In our efforts to pioneer new therapies, our network launched the Center for Discovery and Innovation at the new Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University. Researchers will collaborate to create novel therapies to tackle some of the most difficult diseases like cancer, diabetes and dementia. We are building a health care system for the future in New Jersey. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of medicine. We will continue to adapt, and we will lead the way in transforming care and improving lives.

  1. What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

As a dad of two young children, spending time with my family is a top priority. They keep my wife and me on the go with their many sports and activities, but they are growing fast and I know it’s important to enjoy these moments. When I do have some time to myself, I take the opportunity to get back to my musical roots and college band days; I put on my headphones and go to town on my drum set.

  1. What is your favorite food/recipe and why?

My favorite food is Chinese food.  Where else can you mix chicken, beef, and shrimp in the same dish and it tastes amazing?!
