The Arts Enrich Our Everyday Life

 In Arts, Home Page

Art is all around us. It doesn’t have to come in the form of visiting a museum or an exotic location, although if you have the opportunity, embrace it! There are many ways the arts enrich our lives every day.

The arts help us learn and are being introduced into more classrooms through creative teaching, which integrates fine and performing arts as a pathway for learning. We have been working with Count Basie and Mindpop on a collective impact project called MindAligned, to bring creative teaching to our schools. Check out our MindAligned page for more information on how the arts are being used in the classroom.

Art helps relieve stress. Creating art can reduce stress and help you feel calmer. Check out our blog post on different artistic ways you can reduce stress while exploring your creativity.

The arts provide beauty and evoke emotion – Everyone experiences art differently and that is beautiful in itself. Two people can look at the same sculpture or painting and come out with a completely different interpretation of it – which can lead to some great discussions! Art brings out different emotions in each of us. As Margaret Wolfe Hungerford once said, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

Here are a few ways you can enjoy the arts in your daily life, right from the comfort of your own home!

  1. Music – Music is so powerful from the lyrics to the melody. It can transport you back to a moment in time and bring up vivid memories. Music can give you energy, make you happy, sad or help you fall asleep. My favorite quote  about music(from an unknown author) sums it up perfectly – “With the right music, you either forget everything or you remember everything.”
  2. Cooking – while it may not always look like a work of art in my kitchen, cooking is certainly a form of art. There is a lot of creativity involved from coming up with recipes, combining ingredients and of course, in the plating. Sharing our creations with family and friends makes it even better.
  3. Viewing the artwork of others – whether you listen to a song, watch a dance performance or admire visual art, enjoying the artwork of others is a great way to awaken your own creativity. While at the NJ State Teen Arts Festival, I had the opportunity to watch the high school bands perform. It made me think of my days playing in band and how I wished I kept up with it. I even dug my clarinet out of the closet when I got home and attempted to play again. Seeing the artistic talent of others can ignite a fire in ourselves to explore the arts in our own way.

What is your favorite way to experience art and how does it enrich your life?
